I’m Jose María Fernández, a musician and producer. My relationship with music began when I taught myself guitar at around ten years old. Since then, listening, experimenting and composing have been my way of learning and finding my own musical voice.
I grew up musically with the symphonic and progressive rock of Yes, Mike Oldfield, Jethro Tull and King Crimson. Over time, that curiosity expanded into jazz, folk, film scores and experimental music. My approach is eclectic: I enjoy the moment when influences meet and something unexpected emerges.
In the late eighties, I started working with Atari ST and Notator, at a time when building a MIDI composition took imagination and patience.
Then came cassette recordings, sound modules and many hours working out how to bring the music in my head to life.
I’ve been a composer and guitarist in projects including Cofia, Tao, Alquimia and Los músicos de la cueva.
In 1994, I added a Roland SC-88 Sound Canvas, a sound module that let me add layers of instruments and drum kits to compositions created in Notator.
I also studied harmony, ear training and music reading at Taller de Músics de Barcelona, and for a time I taught harmony for guitar and bass.
In 2007, I moved to Logic Pro, pairing it with the M-Audio NRV10 mixer.
Today I work with Logic Pro and continue to compose, record and explore. I’m especially drawn to music that can evoke images, tell a story without words or transport you somewhere else.
That experience also shapes my work with other musicians. Beyond looking after the sound, I can contribute ideas on composition, arrangements and instrumentation if you’d like that input. I enjoy listening to what someone is trying to express and finding ways to shape it together.
I value commitment, responsibility and the trust to speak openly. I also enjoy sharing ideas, exploring possibilities and having a laugh. For me, working with care and enjoying music go hand in hand.
If this approach to music feels right for your project, tell me what you’re creating.
